Confessions of a Shopaholic
7:13 AM Just caught Confessions of a Shopaholic today in Midvalley. There may be spoilers in this post for the movie so, if any of you have yet to watch it or do not wish to know what takes place, don’t read this post yet till you’ve watched it, aites?
I’ve never been a fan of the Shopaholic series and never read any of the books either. However, decided to catch a feel-good chick flick and this one was quite good. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Tasha who has already declared, ahem, her dislike for the film. Then again, she’s a huge fan of the series and I know what it’s like to love a series of books only for the movies to come out like...well, let’s just say it does not live up to expectations.
We start off with this little girl who wishes she could own and buy what she wants instead of what her mum wants, because her mum obviously does not adhere to the fashion code of her generation, leading to jeering glances from other girls. She can’t wait to grow up and have a ‘magic card’ of her own to use. She grows up and ends up having 12 ‘magic cards’ to use. A little bit too much of magic I should think. This lands her smack right, up to her eyeballs high in credit card debt. She just can’t seem to resist the siren call of shops as she passes them by.
The mannequins literally dance and move and even persuades her to purchase things which she obviously does not need. Well, we should all thank her overactive imagination because if it weren’t for said imagination, the mannequin would not have tried selling her this green scarf which lands her plopping right into the arms of...ahem...charming Luke Brandon. Strange, my imagination never seems to get me anywhere, much less landing me in the arms of such a charming guy!:P Though I must agree the green scarf really is gorgeous.
Her dream is to work at this fashion magazine called Allete. She’s rushing for this interview of a lifetime when she spots this beautiful scarf and the mannequin manages to sell it to her, being the perfect sales person, saying it would define you! You would be known as the girl with the green scarf. Besides, it makes your eyes look bigger. Whoosh, she’s sold. Guess what hun? She maxed out all her cards and had to end up going to this hot dog vendor to get some money. Clashing with Mr. Luke Brandon. In the end, she finds out that someone else by the name of Alicia (gee, sorry if I misspelt it) has already gotten the job. With a tip though, she decides to work at this other magazine which ironically, teaches people how to save money. This magazine is called Super Savings, run by Luke. Surprise, surprise. At first, she doesn’t get a job but due to chance, she ends up writing this witty letter about cashmere coats and investments and sends it wrongly to Luke. He on the other hand, saw the ‘brilliance’ in it all and realized she actually could appeal to normal people as they understood what she was actually writing. Instead of falling asleep every two lines(like me, obviously). Funny moments soon ensue all this while with Becky being hunted by debt collector, Derek Smeath.
She soon fabricates this story whereby this Derek Smeath is actually an ex boyfriend who stalks her under the pretence of being a debt collector. She gets closer and closer to Luke until they go to Miami together and she finds out he was meeting Alicia(a female dog, really) and she ends up being really disappointed. All this while she has been trying really, really hard to kick her shopaholic habits with the help of her best friend, Suze, who happens to be renting her, her place. Her best friend is everything a person could ask for. She stands by her through thick and thin and helps her out with her credit card bills and is fully supportive of her which really, makes you want to go give your best friend a great, big hug. Becky becomes really popular and starts moving up the social ladder when her articles get published under her pen name, the girl with the green scarf.
Finally, when Luke realizes the only girl for him is Becky, everything unravels. Derek Smeath manages to hunt her down and humiliate her live on TV, she falls out with her best friend and Luke is angry with her for lying to him. The scenes where she was explaining to Luke why she could not stop shopping and where she argues with her best friend brought me to tears. She falls out with her best friend because she gave away her bridesmaid dress and her best friend, the bride to be, found out. Soon, when Alette came knocking on her door to hire her, she turned them down and instead, turned to the people in her gathering, Shopaholics Anonymous to help her sell everything she owned. It was like a mob, I tell you. Everyone rushing in to buy items being sold by ‘the girl with the green scarf.’ All this while, Luke, who starts listening to Becky’s advice leaves Super Savings and establishes his own business.
Ok, this scene brought tears to me. The scene where she had to auction off her green scarf. The scarf that started it all. There were two girls, a brunette on the phone and a blonde. In the end, the blonde won the green scarf eventhough Becky’s mum told Becky not to sell it as she had already sold so many things. When Becky had to hand the scarf over, oh dear, it was quite heart wrenching. I cannot imagine what it must be like, giving up something you want so dearly. It’s like it’s a now or never opportunity. If you let go of your hand now there is no turning back and you know you want it so badly. You know you don’t want to give it up but at the same time, you’re afraid to voice it out until you’ve let your fingers uncurl and let it slip through your fingers. Then, you breathe a sigh of relief and sadness at the same time. She told the blonde, “it may bring you love.” Awww....
She attends Suze’s wedding and all is forgiven, with Becky wearing the hideous bridesmaid dress. Good God, it was bright pink with layer and layers of colourful ruffles beneath. After the wedding, she walks past shops and even withstood temptations, leading to the mannequins applauding her and she’s happy and start skipping and dancing with joy when all of a sudden, she sees Luke standing in front of her. Hah! He actually looks at her and said, you sold everything but you kept that?(referring to the hideous dress).
Now, this scene gets it’s own paragraph! It was so, so sweet! He asked her, “so, you really got rid of everything?” “yeah, pretty much. I have nothing left.” He told her, “I wouldn’t say that.” And, and, AND! He brought out the green scarf. I was like awwwwwwwwww.....!!! and she was gobsmacked and said, you were the bidder on the phone! But you lost! He promptly told her, both bidders were his. Then, the magical moment of each film where both characters’ lips seem to find each other and meld. Yes, for other wondering what the heck I’m talking about. They kissed. There, better? I’m sorry I’m gushing about it. It’s just that I found the scene so utterly sweet. Makes me want to go out and find my very own Luke Brandon eh? Hahah!
Isla Fisher is quite adorable in this role and her dance moves are hilarious. So, any of you planning on checking out this movie, just watch it for what it is, a feel-good chick flick without high expectations of it becoming something superbly wonderful.
I personally never did find Hugh Dancy aka Luke gorgeous. He aint’ bad looking, that’s for sure but compared to the likes of my other obsessions...ahem ahem...Brian Kinney and Spike for starters, he’s okay. But I found him utterly charming in this movie. I mean, I’ve always thought he was the charming sort but in this movie, wow! And adorable, not to mention when he saves Becky from some pretty sticky situations. Hence, guy of the day : Hugh Dancy! So, girls, doesn’t this make you want to rush out and get your very own green scarf? Haha...you never know hun. It could bring you love and your very own Luke. Or even if it doesn’t, at least it’ll make your eyes look bigger. *grin*
